Successfully navigating the gap between problem definition and project origination

Our success is demonstrated in the number of projects we have transitioned from planning stages to being shovel ready projects.

About Future Projects Delivered
We deliver Future Projects.

History shows that the path to a delivered project is not straight forward. Regularly there is a problem that is identified in the transport network and these are studied and considered over multiple planning concepts, business cases and in some cases progressed to approved projects.

With a track record of transitioning projects from endless planning cycles to tangible infrastructure, we have played key roles in major initiatives such as the Airport Link, Northern Busway, Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Cross River Rail, and New Gold Coast Stations.
Why Future Projects Delivered
In 2005 Alex submitted his first technical papers that was accepted at the prestigious RETC Conference. It was an exciting time in his ealy career attendeding the RETC conference in Seattle for the presentation of his first published technical paper.

This was a seminal moment in his career and marked a crossroads that shaped the work that he continues to deliver today. This paper was part of the Future Projects section of RETC that also included a paper on the upcoming TransApex project NSBT (now Clem Jones Tunnel). It was at this conference Alex was offered the opportunity to become part of the TransApex projects eventually leading the Airport Link Reference Design.

A lot has happened since the RETC conference in Seattle in 2005. The Sonics moved to Oklahoma, the Phoenix Suns won the Western Conference Finals and Alex has bought lots of basketball shoes. One thing has remained constant Alex continues to work on Future Projects and delivers these mega projects from their early conceptual stages into operation. These projects include Airport Link, Northern Busway, Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, Cross River Rail and most recently New Gold Coast Stations.

Cross River Rail

CRR has gone through a number of iterations and false starts including BaT prior to our engagement on the most recent Business Case and Approvals process. The team was able to develop innovative solutions with regard both the form of the project (shorter tunnel, modified routes, staged stabling solutions) and delivery strategy including the separation of CRR into three projects: the greenfield tunnelling works, brownfield rail works and ETCS signalling. This innovative structuring and procurement approach enabled CRR to be successfully procured and it is currently being constructed.

Toowoomba Second Range Crossing

This large bypass of Toowoomba was largely driven to improve access to Toowoomba, improve safety and remove oversize vehicles from travelling through the city. Through the interactive engagement with bidders the tunnel was replaced with a large cut through the top of the range that allowed all Dangerous Goods Vehicles to use the bypass (rather than still sending them through the City of Toowoomba) while reducing the OPEX for the project which provided large Whole of Life and sustainability benefits.

Airport Link

Airport Link was procured with the Northern Busway and Airport Roundabout Upgrade D&C projects and was Australia’s largest road project at the time. The scale, complexity and technical challenges resulted in the project having significant community impacts. Throughout the procurement process innovation was encouraged and it led to numerous changes that included moving the largely above ground Kedron interchange underground improving community amenity, reducing the size of ventilation outlets on the project, integrating the Northern Busway more efficiently with the toll road and simplifying the congested Airport Roundabout.

New Gold Coast Stations

New Gold Coast Stations program of works is constructing three new stations at Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac. The team worked with the CRRDA to accelerate the program by amending the delivery strategy, updating the contract documentation and running three interactive tendering processes simultaneously. The contracting strategy for each station was developed to respond to the varied challenges that were specific to each location. We worked successfully with numerous stakeholders including QR, TMR, CoGC and TransLink to achieve all three procurements in a compressed 15-month time frame.

Northern Busway

The Northern Busway was constructed as a predominately underground solution that needed to have open air stations to minimise OPEX costs. This was easily resolved in Kedron by constructing the station at surface. Lutwyche Station presented greater challenges with the tunnel connecting Kedron to Truro Street. Throughout the interactive tendering process with BrisConnections we were able to work with the successful consortia to develop a station that was open air and was sited under Lutwyche Road. This solution provided the OPEX savings while maintaining the Busway underground.
